event description

Since their initial arrival on these shores  as “chattel” Black men have experienced decimating generational levels of marginalization in almost all areas  of life.

Since their initial arrival on American shores as “chattel” Black men have experienced decimating generational levels of marginalization in almost all areas of life. “To be male, poor, and either African-American or Native-American is to confront, on a daily basis, a deeply held racism that exists in every social institution,” writes The Brookings Institute’s Camille Busette. “No other demographic group has fared as badly, so persistently and for so long.”

Black men and boys are being vastly disproportionately discriminated against in education, employment, housing, and medical care; hassled, beaten, strangled, arrested, or shot by cops; charged more aggressively by prosecutors; and sentenced more severely by judges. It’s not hard to figure how these statistics may affect not only one’s employability, income, or future earning potential but perhaps more important their mental and physical health.

In an effort to improve this group’s mental  and physical coping skills, this group will explore some of the contributing factors of these dynamics and explore solutions and results through the use of film, music, books, and lectures that cover a series of themes ranging from image/identity to positive relationships.
